Jaelyn Olson Receives Fellowship and Stine Endowment Funding

2016 Apr 13

Buena Vista University student Jaelyn Olson, a junior chemistry major from Eldora, completed her Rural Health Fellowship focused on pharmacy for the January scholars program.

Olson shadowed three pharmacists during her fellowship, including Dr. Jon McKenna at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Dr. Jessica Rubin at Walgreens in Storm Lake and Dr. Melody Hoy at Eldora Pharmacy in Eldora.

"Each of the three internships allowed me to witness and be a part of different types of pharmacies, which gave me the insight I needed to decide which type of pharmacy I may want to go into in the future," Olson said.

The Rural Health Fellowships program is funded through BVU's Stine Endowment and is designed to provide an internship experience to students interested in a health profession in a rural setting. The program also provides a $1,000 stipend towards her application costs for pharmacy school.

The Stine Endowment is unique to BVU and is intended to promote, support and expand high-impact educational practices, and to enhance enriched learning opportunities for students in the School of Science. The Stine Endowment grants superior access to many meaningful internships, research projects, presentations and science-oriented expeditions for students, which amounts to $75,000 annually. With the increase in funding, the University has taken a comprehensive approach to broadening the horizons of BVU science students.
