2016 Feb 26

Buena Vista University's (BVU) student media organizations took home several awards and other honors at the 2016 Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) conference held during February in Des Moines.

Madeleine McCormick, a sophomore digital media major from Huxley , and other students in BVU's campus media organizations - KBVU, the University Cable Network (UCN) and The Tack Online - took home 33 awards in numerous categories, including two overall awards. The ICMA contest is judged solely by professionals in the field, with the New York Press Association judging the 2015 submissions.

McCormick was awarded Best News Programming: Third place for KBVU, "Special Report: Earthquake in Nepal"; Best Newscast: First place for KBVU, "Did You Know News 11/06/2014"; Second place for KBVU, "Did You Know News 11/20/2014"; Third place for KBVU, "Did You Know News 12/04/2014"; Best News Story: First place for The Tack Online, "BVU Among Those Sold Unusable Travel Vouchers By Omaha Company"; Best Profile Story: Honorable mention for The Tack Online, "Boston to Attend the London Academy of Theatre and Dramatic Arts".

In the overall awards, The Tack Online received the Multimedia Organization of the Year Award from the ICMA for the fourth year in a row, and KBVU won the First Amendment Award.

"Any state or national competition inspires our students to work hard and produce great work. The ICMA contest regularly challenges our students to think about what they are producing on a broader scale," said Dr. Andrea Frantz, associate professor of digital media. "I think the fact that our students came home with more awards than last year is a testament to their dedication to craft, and we're very proud of them."
