Nicole Boysen in Buena Vista University Theatre Production

2014 Feb 10

Buena Vista University (BVU) Theatre is presenting two one-act plays, "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell and "The Dumb Waiter" by Harold Pinter which will be directed by two BVU students. Performances of the plays will take place Feb. 12-15 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium on the BVU campus.

The cast members for both plays are comprised of BVU students who auditioned and were selected by the student directors, and the assistant directors and understudies were also chosen by the student directors.

Nicole Boysen from Danbury is a member of the cast in “Trifles” and is playing the role of Mrs. Hale. Boysen is a sophomore English major at BVU.

"Trifles" will be directed by Kadie Dennison, a senior communication studies and theatre double major from Lisbon. This murder mystery is based on the real-life murder case of John Hossack that occurred south of Indianola, which Glaspell reported on while working at the Des Moines Daily News in the 1900s.

"The Dumb Waiter" will be directed by Hannah Anderson, a senior arts management-speech/drama major from Boone. In this comedic drama, two hit men await their next assignment by talking about various things as they pass the time. Written in 1956, the play captures the style of the time and the ironic way of the world.

The performances are part of BVU's New Visions Series, which gives students the opportunity to direct a main stage show and handle all of the tasks associated with the production, including casting, working with designers and running rehearsals.

"The experience students receive through our New Vision Series is rare in the world of collegiate theatre," said David Walker, assistant professor of theatre at BVU. "They gain real-world experience in the business of theatre, as well as how to work with all kinds of people on and off the stage. This experience, when added to a resume, helps our students stand apart from the rest when applying to graduate programs or their first post-graduation job."
