Olivia Tuel Awarded Stine Endowment Funding

2016 Apr 26

Buena Vista University student Olivia Tuel, a junior biology major from Clarence, traveled to Tanzania for six weeks during December 2015 and January 2016. Her trip was funded by the BVU Stine Endowment.

During Tuel's time in Tanzania, she shadowed professionals within several different healthcare fields. Some of her experience included visiting patients with cancer and HIV/AIDS, scrubbing in to observe surgeries and shadowing physical therapists. Tuel plans to pursue medical school after graduation.

"Classroom learning is very important to me and having this experiential learning on top of it allowed for full immersion and therefore a more in-depth, educational experience," said Tuel.

The Stine Endowment is unique to BVU and is intended to promote, support and expand high-impact educational practices, and to enhance enriched learning opportunities for students in the School of Science. The Stine Endowment grants superior access to many meaningful internships, research projects, presentations and science-oriented expeditions for students, which amounts to $75,000 annually. With the increase in funding, the University has taken a comprehensive approach to broadening the horizons of BVU science students.
