Sarah Schlichte Named "Senior of the Year"

The Buena Vista University (BVU) National Alumni Association presented Sarah Schlichte with "Senior of the Year" honors at the Student Recognition Dinner on April 29.

"I was astonished when I was chosen for the award because all of the finalists were extraordinary candidates," said Schlichte, a biology major from Templeton. "I am deeply honored and elated to be recognized as Senior of the Year. This accomplishment means a lot to me since the selection process involves faculty, students and alumni."

Each year, the BVU National Alumni Association honors an outstanding senior who demonstrates academic achievement, leadership characteristics and the ability to set personal and career goals.

"BVU taught me that you are often stronger than you think you are, and in those times when you don't want to be strong anymore, there is always people around to support you," said Schlichte. "My professors have inspired me in several ways. Most importantly, they pushed and encouraged me to be my best and reach my goals."

Throughout the past four years at BVU, Schlichte has been involved in several campus organizations, including Team Wellness and Chemistry in Action, among others. She is also a tutor for the Center of Academic Excellence and an academic assistant for Dr. Kristy McClellan, associate professor of biology. Schlichte is also a member of the Honors Program and is a recognized Dean's Fellow.

"I will miss the close-knit family aspect of BVU," added Schlichte, who plans to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in the fall to earn her Ph.D. in neuroscience. "BVU was home. Whether I was walking across campus or walking into class, there was always a familiar, welcoming face."

Other finalists for this award included Elizabeth Kim, a senior biology major from Fairmont, Minn.; Tarynne Kinghorn, a senior biology major from Shenandoah; Tyler Larson, a senior athletic training major from Alta; Matthew Tennyson, a senior elementary education major from Truman, Minn.; and Katie Turnquist, a senior business and accounting double major from Alta.
