Nine Buena Vista University business students and nine science students have been selected for the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award for the 2020 calendar year. The awards, which range up to $5,000, were created by two separate $750,000 endowments from the foundations established by Dr. Harold Walter Siebens and named after the long-time advisor and counsel to Siebens and the foundations. The endowments support annual awards for up to three pre-qualified, academically high-performing BVU business and science students in each of the second, third, and fourth years of school.

Buena Vista University congratulates more than 500 students who were named to the Fall 2020 Dean's List. The Dean's List recognizes full-time students achieving a 3.5 grade point average or higher for the semester.

Four Buena Vista University computer science majors earned first place in a computer hacking contest recently hosted by Taylor University of Upland, Ind. BVU was represented by Kelsey McConnaughy, Brieann Haberl, Tyler Freese, and Greg Tystahl. The group, advised by Dr. Nathan Backman, Associate Professor of Computer Science. The contest requires teams to find vulnerabilities (bugs) in application code that can lead to the theft of confidential data (flags in the simulation) residing on the server. Teams must fix those vulnerabilities to prevent the theft of their flags. If a team hasn't fixed code and, thus, protected its flag, other teams may capture the flag.

Seven Buena Vista University students took home awards at the 2020 College Media Association Film and Audio Festival. The students, whose award-winning work was screened at the ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention, include: Jordyn Daggs-Olson, Lena Gripp, Isabel Haas, Zachary Hess, Mason McGrew, Guy Tannenbaum, and Justin Sampson.

Buena Vista University crowned its 2020 Homecoming royalty during Coronation on Oct. 9. John Corcoran, Erin Gerke, Reed Kruse, McKenzie Lansing, Cassidy Miller, Eric Pacheco, Savanna Pohlmann, and Devon Van Houten were nominated as Homecoming royalty. Tanner Frost and Tania Toj were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.

Freshmen from 19 states join transfer students in being welcomed to Buena Vista University by 100-plus returning students, faculty, and staff members prior to participating in the time-honored tradition of marching through the Victory Arch to begin their journey at BVU.

The Invest in Rural Iowa Scholarship Program helps 15 future BVU Beavers in each of the next four years achieve their collegiate dreams as an anonymous benefactor's incredible $1 million gift provides renewable scholarships of $5,000 per year to students who hail from a 19-county region of Northwest Iowa and pledge to continue their efforts in serving others in their communities.

BVU digital media students collectively earned three organizational awards and twenty-nine individual awards at the Society for Collegiate Journalists National Contest. The Society for Collegiate Journalists helps to build leadership skills among student journalists. It also offers budding journalists the opportunity to have their work judged by professionals in the field during its annual national contest. The contest is designed to celebrate and recognize outstanding student work across all platforms of media.

Each year, Buena Vista University celebrates students with our Student Recognition Dinner. This event symbolizes our pride for student achievements and honors those of leadership and academic excellence. Although the celebration was unable to take place in person this year, we want students to know that we take great pride in their achievements and want to take time to honor them.

Buena Vista University's cheer and dance program saw a successful 2019-20 competition season before a national meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C. was cancelled due to COVID-19.

BVU celebrates eight senior baseball players, whose final season was cut short due to the coronavirus. Coach Eddie recognizes the role each senior played in the success of Beaver baseball.
